The Federal hiring process is different than other hiring processes. In order to move forward in the process, your application must look EXACTLY like the Federal HR staff needs it to look. Any deviances from what they want can make you ineligible to move forward in the process. Additionally, there are nuances many are unaware of—things that you should do and things that you should NOT do—can propel you or derail you in the process. There are three reasons why hiring a coach is beneficial to you.
- First, a coach can assist you in understanding what you should do in the Federal hiring process.
- Second, a coach can assist you in understanding what you should NOT do in the Federal hiring process. Knowing what to do and what not to do can accelerate the time it takes you to receive your job offer, helping you earn your Federal salary and benefits sooner. If we can help you get started with the Federal government even one pay period sooner, the service would have paid for itself.
- Third, we work with our clients to negotiate salary and vacation time, two things that may be negotiable after a Federal job offer is received. Most of our clients negotiate somewhere between $5,000 to $7,000 more than they were offered; others negotiate higher salaries up to $10,000 to $15,000 above their original offer. The bottom line is we can save you time and angst and earn you more money in the long run.

Although you can apply with a private sector resume, a Federal resume will allow you to score much higher in the rating process. A cover letter can be included but it will probably add little value to your application package, unless it is specifically requested in the vacancy announcement.

It varies tremendously; it could take a few months or longer. After your Federal application is submitted, the HR Specialist “grades” it. Those applications with the highest “grades” are forwarded to the hiring official, who may or may not contact you for an interview. The hiring manager makes a selection of the best candidate, and if you are selected, the HR Specialist will contact you to extend a tentative offer of employment, contingent upon a successful background check. Once you receive an offer of employment, it can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months (or longer) to actually start work at your new Federal job. You can only start working at your Federal job once your background security check is completed.
-
If you have had a legal altercations or financial hardships (bankruptcy, short sale, divorce, late payments, etc.), you may still be eligible for Federal employment. Your eligibility for employment will depend on agency policy, how serious the incident was, and how long ago it occurred. Whatever the circumstances are, be honest in your responses to any questions you are asked, because an agency can terminate your employment immediately if it learns that you were not completely honest during the investigation process.
-
The fact that you are not a Veteran should NOT deter you at all from seeking Federal employment. Why? According to the US Office of Personnel Management statistics, only one out of every three new hires to Federal government positions are Veterans. This means that two out of every three new hires are NOT Veterans. If you are not a Veteran, one of your best strategies is to apply to as many jobs as you can (that you are qualified for). Once you have a good package, it’s a numbers game and more applications will result in more referrals.

We are extremely confident in our knowledge and expertise regarding the Federal government’s hiring process. With Corliss Jackson’s 20 years of hands-on experience as an HR consultant and as a former Federal Agency HR Director, we possess knowledge about this specialized process that most have no understanding of and no access to. We impart this knowledge to our clients through seminars, webinars, and one-on-one coaching sessions, but we do not guarantee you will get a Federal job offer. Why not? We guarantee that we will provide you with a competitive resume in the Federal format and that we will guide and coach you in your next steps, but only you can go on the Federal interview and only you can go through the background investigation process. These two parts of the Federal hiring process are totally beyond our control and the outcome of them relies solely on you. Therefore, we cannot guarantee you will get a Federal job offer.
